Jordan’s drug industry is one of the most advanced in the region, importing and manufacturing generic pharmaceutical products to serve hospitals and pharmacies across the kingdom. But counterfeit drugs are becoming a growing concern, with an estimated 25% of medicines on the market being fake.

The sale of counterfeit drugs is a global problem that affects both developed and developing countries. However, developing countries are particularly vulnerable to the health risks posed by these fake products. This is because these countries often have weak regulatory systems and lack access to quality medicines.

As a result, counterfeiters can more easily sell their fake products in these markets.

How do they enter the market?

The internet has made it easy for counterfeit drugs to enter the market. Many people order medications online without a prescription, and some of these websites sell fake drugs. The drugs may not have the same active ingredient as the real medication, or  they may not have any active ingredient at all. They may also contain harmful impurities.

Some counterfeit drugs are made in clandestine laboratories, and their quality control is nonexistent. These drugs may be dangerous to take, even if they contain the correct active ingredient.

The Challenges of Fighting Counterfeit Drugs in Jordan

The counterfeit drug trade is a global problem, and one that is particularly challenging in countries like Jordan. In Jordan, counterfeit drugs are often sold openly in markets and pharmacies, and it can be difficult for consumers to know if they are buying a fake or substandard product.
